Arsenal head coach Unai Emery said in the summer that the gunners would have five captains during the 2019/20 campaign and he has today confirmed the five players that will lead the squad in its quest to get back into the Premier League top four.
Arsenal’s permanent captain is now Granit Xhaka after Unai Emery had the players vote for the individual that should lead them and the Swiss international came out on top as per the head coach of the North Londoners. Unai Emery has today confirmed that the five captains in order are Granit Xhaka, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Hector Bellerin, Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil. So it looks like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be wearing the armband when Granit Xhaka is not on the pitch.
Granit Xhaka has captained the gunners in five of the six Premier League matches that the gunners have played this season so far and it’s great that Unai Emery has finally made it official so that the supporters can finally stop speculating.
“We spoke about that last week. I gave them some values, some qualities and after they voted.” Unai Emery told Football.London.
“I checked this week and the five captains after that are: [Granit] Xhaka first, second is [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang, third is Hector Bellerin, four is [Alexandre] Lacazette and five is Mesut [Ozil].”
Granit Xhaka will have to work hard to regain the trust of the Arsenal supporters because there has been an outrage amongst the fanbase due to the confirmation that the Swiss international has been made their skipper. Aubameyang is however a fan favourite and the fans are delighted that he is the vice captain.
