After Arsenal’s impressive pre-season win over Newcastle United in Singapore, centre-back William Saliba provided fans with a major boost by confirming that talks over a new contract are underway — and sounding very optimistic about his future with the club.
The Gunners earned a solid 2-0 victory against their Premier League rivals in a friendly match as part of their Asia tour, with goals from Martin Ødegaard and Gabriel Martinelli sealing the result. The performance was dominant, but it was what happened after the match that truly excited supporters.
When asked whether he plans to follow his centre-back partner Gabriel Magalhães and extend his stay at Arsenal, Saliba smiled and responded:
“Yeah, hopefully … There is a good conversation with my agent and the club. Let’s see.”
The 23-year-old French international has become a cornerstone of Mikel Arteta’s defence, forming one of the most formidable centre-back partnerships in the Premier League alongside Gabriel. Arsenal’s defence was among the best in Europe last season, and keeping Saliba long-term is a key part of the club’s strategy.
Saliba’s current deal still has time left, but Arsenal are eager to reward his importance and consistency with a new contract that reflects his growing status at the club. Talks have been ongoing for several weeks, and the player’s latest comments suggest progress is being made behind the scenes.
His words mirror those of Gabriel, who signed a new deal last season and has been vocal about his commitment to the club and the project Arteta is building.
Saliba’s development since joining Arsenal has been remarkable. After several loan spells in France, the centre-back returned to north London and quickly established himself as a mainstay in the starting XI. His composure on the ball, strength in one-on-one duels, and understanding with Gabriel have given Arsenal the defensive stability they craved for years.
Off the pitch, Saliba has become a fan favourite, and his popularity continues to grow. Supporters were quick to flood social media with excitement after hearing his post-match comments, hoping that a new contract will be announced soon.
Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta is believed to be directly involved in negotiations, alongside Saliba’s representatives. With the player happy in London and Arteta keen to keep his defensive leader, the expectation is that an agreement will be reached in the coming weeks.
Securing Saliba’s future would be yet another statement of intent from Arsenal, who have already been active in the transfer market this summer bringing in players like Martin Zubimendi, Christian Mosquera, and Viktor Gyökeres.
As the Gunners continue to prepare for a title challenge in the upcoming season, tying down key players like Saliba is just as important as any new signing. And judging by his comments in Singapore, that future is looking increasingly likely.
