Arteta Provides Update on Declan Rice After Substitution vs Real Madrid

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has given an update on Declan Rice after the midfielder was forced off during the Gunners’ impressive Champions League win over Real Madrid at the Emirates Stadium. The England international was substituted midway through the second half, sparking concern among supporters after his commanding performance helped Arsenal dominate the European giants.

Speaking after the match, Arteta addressed the reason for Rice’s substitution, suggesting the issue stemmed from a problem with his foot.

“I think Declan Rice had an issue with his foot, I don’t know if it was a tackle or what it was,” Arteta said.

Rice had already made headlines earlier in the night, scoring twice from direct free-kicks — a historic achievement that saw him become the first player ever to do so in a Champions League knockout match. His goals and midfield control were central to Arsenal’s 3-0 victory, putting them in a strong position ahead of the second leg in Madrid.

The sight of Rice limping and eventually being replaced understandably caused a stir among Arsenal fans, especially considering his growing influence in the team. His partnership with Thomas Partey and Martin Ødegaard has been vital to Arsenal’s tactical balance this season, and any potential absence could be a big blow heading into a crucial run of fixtures.

Arteta, however, did not appear overly concerned, and his comments hinted that the decision to take Rice off may have been precautionary.

Rice’s substitution came shortly after a collision in midfield, where he was seen wincing and checking his boot. Although he attempted to play on, the coaching staff opted not to take any risks with one of their most important players.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the exact nature of the problem, Arteta’s tone suggested optimism that the issue is not serious. Arsenal fans will now anxiously await further updates from the club’s medical team in the coming days.

Since arriving from West Ham last summer, Rice has proven to be a transformative signing. His defensive solidity, passing range, and surprising ability to contribute goals in big games have made him a fan favourite and a key figure in Arteta’s plans. Against Real Madrid, he once again delivered on the biggest stage, showing composure, intelligence, and leadership beyond his years.

Arteta’s approach throughout the season has shown a willingness to protect his players during intense periods, especially with multiple competitions at stake. With the Premier League title race still in full swing and a second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu on the horizon, Arsenal will be hoping Rice’s foot issue does not keep him sidelined for long.

For now, the club and its fans will take comfort in the manager’s words and hope that their midfield general will be back in action soon — ready to lead the Gunners in their historic European charge.
