Arteta’s Transfer Twist: Arsenal Eye Shock New Kind Of Signing

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is exploring options to bring in a new central defender this summer, with the intention of complementing his trusted first-choice pairing of Gabriel Magalhães and William Saliba. While the Brazilian-French duo have established themselves as one of the most consistent centre-back pairings in the Premier League, Arteta is keen to strengthen the squad’s depth in that department ahead of the 2025/26 season.

With Arsenal set to compete on multiple fronts next term — including another Champions League campaign — the need for quality rotation options has become more urgent. Injuries to key players and a demanding fixture schedule last season exposed some of the limitations in Arsenal’s defensive ranks, and Arteta wants to ensure that he has the personnel to maintain high standards across all competitions.

The Gunners are believed to be targeting a central defender who not only fits their technical profile but can also offer versatility and composure when called upon. While Saliba and Gabriel remain untouchable as starters, the club wants to avoid a drop in quality whenever one of them is rested or unavailable.

Jakub Kiwior and Takehiro Tomiyasu have both filled in admirably when required, but neither is seen as a dedicated centre-back backup in the mould Arteta is seeking. Kiwior has often played at left-back, while Tomiyasu’s versatility makes him more of a utility defender. With Rob Holding no longer at the club and the future of other fringe defenders uncertain, Arsenal are actively working to identify and recruit a reliable option.

Ideally, the incoming centre-back would be comfortable on the ball, capable of playing in a high defensive line, and possess the physical attributes to cope with the Premier League’s intensity. Arsenal’s style under Arteta demands defenders who can not only defend aggressively but also contribute to building play from the back — qualities that have made Saliba and Gabriel so indispensable.

Sporting director Andrea Berta is believed to be assisting Arteta in this search, compiling a shortlist of targets who meet the required profile. Whether Arsenal pursue an experienced option to provide short-term depth or a younger talent who can be developed over time remains to be seen, but the club’s intent is clear: defensive reinforcements are a priority.

Bringing in another centre-back would also give Arteta greater tactical flexibility. It could allow for the use of a back three in certain matches, offer protection against injuries, and help manage workloads across a long season. With the Gunners no longer operating as underdogs, the expectations are higher — and so too is the need for a robust, balanced squad.

As pre-season approaches, Arsenal are expected to accelerate talks with potential targets. With other areas of the squad — such as striker and wide forward — also under review, the addition of a quality central defender would complete a crucial part of the puzzle in Arteta’s ongoing mission to turn Arsenal into serial contenders.
